It’s my pleasure to introduce you to my special guest, Brett Lillie, who is a coach, speaker, chiropractor, and author of the book, Rediscover Your Athlete Within. Today we delve into Brett’s journey, the inspiration behind writing his book plus insights into how we can connect back to our inner athlete. Brett firmly believes that everyone has an athlete within them. We might not all be Olympic athletes, but Brett encourages us to revisit the moments of play, curiosity, and adventure in our childhood. These are the building blocks of our inner athlete, finding those moments when your mindset and body were perfectly aligned, and you were fully present and engaged in life.

Toward the end of the episode, Brett shares a sneak peek at his 10-step process for personal growth and rediscovery. The journey begins with understanding where you are and who you are, followed by transformation, becoming your best self, and defining your “why.”

My guest today is Cassandra Goodman, founder of the Centre For Self-Fidelity and the author of two insightful books, including her latest release, “Being True: How to Be Yourself at Work.” We’re talking today about being your true self in the workplace, some of the reasons why many people lose their sense of identity and how we can reconnect with our authentic selves.

Cassandra’s mission is truly inspiring. Through coaching, workshops, keynote speaking and her books, she aims to empower busy, big-hearted individuals to rediscover their true selves within the often demanding confines of the workplace.

In this conversation, Cassandra shares how, as a child, she attached her self-worth to her achievements rather than her true self, which ultimately caused her to suffer and behave in ways that contradicted her core values.

She explains why people often lose touch with their true nature, trading authenticity for attachment during their formative years. We talk about the fact that these habits and stories need to be challenged so that we can operate out of our authentic nature and not base our identity on external factors.

We also tackle the dilemma of people often feeling compelled to be someone different at work in order to fit in or advance their careers. People are often trapped in this situation due to financial pressures but Cassandra emphasises the importance of evaluating the personal cost and devising a plan to transition to a more compatible workplace.

When it comes to self-worth, recognising that we have placed too much emphasis on external factors can be confronting. Shifting from external validation to internal validation requires a leap of faith and Cassandra shares her advice on how to tap into our own energy source through playfulness and self-awareness.

I’m joined by Kathryn Elliott, an inspiring woman who made a bold career change in her forties. Kathryn, who is now one of Australia’s leading binge-drinking and alcohol coaches, left her former career in PR and media in 2020 to establish her business, the Alcohol Mindset Coach. In this episode, we delve into Kathryn’s remarkable journey, her motivation for making a career shift, the challenges she faced, and the skills she brought from her previous career to succeed in her new venture.

Kathryn’s journey began with a significant moment of self-reflection at the age of 47 when she decided to reassess her relationship with alcohol. She recognised that her drinking habits didn’t align with her values, leading her to stop drinking in 2019. However, just six weeks later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which further prompted her to question her life’s purpose and career choices.

After 25 years in media and PR, Kathryn felt there was more to life than her successful career. She decided to use her personal experience of changing her drinking habits and battling breast cancer as a catalyst for a career change. Kath talks about how this shift led her to become an alcohol coach and her biggest challenge – attracting clients.

Many women in their forties have a desire to change careers but aren’t sure how they can transfer their knowledge and experience into their new venture. Kath shares how her expertise in communication, writing and media relations, along with a network of contacts, proved beneficial. However, she discovered that her true strength lay in sharing her story personally and vulnerably. This authentic approach allowed her to connect with others, helping them see themselves in her journey and inspiring them to make positive changes in their own lives.

One significant lesson Kathryn learned during her transition was the importance of staying true to herself. She shares her journey of attempting to conform to marketing strategies that didn’t align with her values and how she realised the importance of authenticity. For her, the key to success was finding channels that felt genuine and authentic to attract clients and surrounding herself with a supportive network.

I’m joined by Shivani Gopal, the founder and CEO of Elladex, to talk about the importance of inclusion in the workplace. Shivani has won the 2022 New South Wales Excellence in Women’s Leadership Award and the Top 50 Small Business Leaders Award. She’s recognised as a leading feminist and business thought leader, helping women navigate through their careers, businesses, and financial success.

In our conversation, Shivani talks about the invisible barriers that prevent people from diverse backgrounds from reaching their full potential. She notes that organisations must prioritise inclusion and create a psychologically safe environment where people can speak up, take risks, and innovate.

We discuss the differences between diversity and inclusion, how they are often confused with each other, and why it is important for businesses to have both. Shivani emphasises that diversity and inclusion must go hand-in-hand for organisations to benefit from a diverse workforce. She explains that inclusion is the mechanism that ensures diverse voices are heard and respected, and it is the key to unlocking the potential of diversity.

Shivani also talks about the importance of visibility and representation in leadership roles. She believes that seeing diverse leaders in visible positions creates a greater sense of belonging and permission for others to strive for leadership roles. Shivani asserts that diversity happens from the bottom up, but inclusion must come from the top down, as people in positions of power and authority are crucial to removing barriers to inclusion.

Shivani shares a personal story where she questioned a board member about the company’s commitment to inclusion and diversity at the executive and board levels. She highlights the importance of asking these questions respectfully and with a solution-oriented approach.

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she knew she needed to change the way she was operating and she talks about the process she went through to establish new patterns of behaviour that served her in a more positive way.

We discuss how many leaders carry the feeling that they aren’t good enough and Rebecca shares four practical tips that we can implement today to help reduce the impact. Rebecca talks about the power of meditation and mindfulness practice and how this helps not only calm our minds but also helps us observe automatic negative thoughts so that we can reframe them.

Rebecca also recommends journaling to get our thoughts out on paper and recognise what situations trigger us to feel certain ways. She also talks about the power of implementing a daily reflective practice to focus on the things that we are doing well.

Joining me on the podcast is the incredible Lissy Abrahams, a relationship therapist with a treasure trove of experience. Lissy’s work has touched numerous lives, and in our conversation, we delved into the core of relationship dynamics, how they change over time, and the resources available for couples seeking assistance.

People often look at their partner as someone they’re assessing for compatibility, pondering future life together, including potential children. The irony is, as Lissy points out, we often can’t predict who our partners will become or who we will become in the relationship. The true essence of a relationship goes beyond the wedding day and the initial impressions.

For couples feeling lost in their relationship, Lissy offers a range of resources, from her book ‘Relationship Reset – How to break the cycle of conflict and create secure and lasting love ’ to more detailed courses designed to dive deeper into understanding one’s own mind. She emphasised the shortage of couples therapists available and the importance of resources like these to alleviate the increasing demand.

We also touch on what it is like to experience these stories from the perspective of the therapist. Lissy candidly shares how she manages the influx of dramatic stories, pain, and conflict she encounters. Her grounding techniques, like spending time in the park and abstaining from news that can “jangle” our nerves, play a crucial role in her self-preservation.

My guest today is the incredible Scott Curley, who is joining me all the way from Dallas, Texas. From an early age, Scott experienced a rollercoaster of hardships, including abuse, drug addiction, prison sentences and homelessness. Yet he managed to use all these experiences as a vehicle for personal growth, turning his life around to become a self-made millionaire on a mission to inspire others.

Now, Scott is the CEO of one of the largest tax resolution firms in the USA and is an author, keynote speaker, and mentor, inspiring many to take ownership of their lives and step into greatness. Scott’s self published book, Absolution, has also recently been picked up by a major publisher, meaning that many more lives will be impacted by his incredible mindset, resilience and perspective on success and failure.

In this conversation, Scott shares his epiphany about needing to commit to his commitment, inspiring him to start his own business, which is now worth $40 million, while he was still homeless. He shares a powerful distinction between obstacles and barriers and the power of turning our mistakes into opportunities for growth.

As Scott reflects on the obstacles he has faced, including 9 felonies and decades of drug addiction, he talks about the power of taking ownership of your mistakes which empowers you to move forward in life. We talk about moving out of victimhood, having a deep inner belief and understanding that there is no such thing as failure.

With me today is the Founder of Ladies Finance Club, Molly Benjamin, whose mission is to help women get rich so they have full control and freedom over their lives. Molly released her book, Girls Just Wanna Have Funds, earlier this year and I’m delighted to share a conversation with Molly today about what women can do to become more money savvy.

At first Molly was not very good with money. Realising her friends were also a bit clueless when it came to personal finances, Molly put on an info night with a money expert in her living room. From there, things really took off and in 2018, The Ladies Finance Club was born. Now, LFC has had over 35,000 women attend their events, masterclasses, webinars, and workshops.

In this conversation, Molly talks about the steps she took to turn her money situation around, particularly the mindset shift to go from spender to saver. She talks about the first step of building up an emergency fund, even if you start with just $10, and the empowerment this gives women to take control of their finances.

Girls Just Wanna Have Funds is specifically designed to be gone through with a friend and we talk about the importance of accountability when it comes to changing your money habits. We talk about why women are reluctant to look at their finances, the impact from generations before us and how half the battle is just getting started.

Rather than creating a list of things we want to experience before we die – and often put off until then – a life list is full of goals to be lived out today, while we’re still young enough to achieve them.<br /><br />We discuss the struggle women in particular have with prioritising their own lives and happiness, and Kate gives practical advice on how to find time to make a rewarding life list. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death amongst women. However, due to the male-centric research on this disease, many women are unaware they even have a condition until it’s too late. I chat with the effervescent Di Westaway about loving yourself and your body, and why leading your health can help save your life.<br /><br />Di is the founder of Wild Women on Top, an enterprise that creates life-changing adventures for women to get fit by walking in nature. Coastrek is one of those adventures which, with its strong community of women, has raised over 45 million dollars for The Heart Foundation.<br /><br />In today’s episode, Di shares the turning point in her own life that pushed her to challenge herself and prioritise her health in a major way. She talks about how enduring loss gave her the courage to change her life and the confidence to believe she could do the impossible.<br /><br />Being a woman often comes with feeling the need to put everyone else first – there’s taking the kids to school, getting work done, keeping the household in order… It’s hard to find any time for yourself within all the chaos. In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with Dr Kristy Goodwin who has become the thought leader in the neuro-productivity space. Today we will discuss the main problems Dr Kristy is seeing as we work to counteract the culture of mental wellbeing. ‘Most people innately know that their digital habits and behaviours have perhaps slipped into the dangerous, unproductive and stressful territory’ says Dr Kristy.

There are three main reasons for our reliance on our digital devices. Firstly, during the pandemic, our digital load was increased to 13+ hours per day on digital devices. Secondly, we have an ‘always on culture’ which is causing a digital presenteeism. And finally, ‘we are working in ways which are not aligned to our neurobiology, meaning we have adopted work practices that aren’t designed to the way our brain and body operate’ Dr Kristy says. ‘These issues are causing a culture of working in marathons, rather than sprints.’ A lot of employees have struggled with their sleep during the pandemic. Research shows blue light delays the onset of sleep, and if used within 60 mins before we sleep, it can decrease our REM cycle. Dr Kristy calls it, ‘wired and tired. We may be getting the same hours of sleep but our REM sleep has been impacted and there are cascading impacts.’

‘Rest and recovery are a responsibility’ says Dr Kristy, so how do we as leaders and employers counteract this current digital burn-out? ‘If we really want to optimise people’s mental health and wellbeing, we have to swim further up-stream and look at why people are so digitally exhausted and depleted.’ As leaders, we need to ask if we have manageable workloads and structures. Output and productivity can be mapped. ‘Though by accident, many of us have adopted some unsustainable, and unhealthy digital habits, norms and behaviours’ says Dr Kristy. The organisations which will thrive in this digital age, will tackle these topics, without going back to old ways of working.

Dr Kristy says, ‘When we start to align our work schedule with our biology, our productivity increases and our wellbeing is looked after.’ Employers need to also consider the reciprocal benefits of flexible work arrangements for their employees. ‘These open conversations are so important and, establish a digital guardrail.’

In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with international confidence coach, Erika Cramer. She is a 5-star Podcast host of ‘The Confidence Chronicles.’ She has created a seven-figure global business by mentoring and helping those who have suffered similar life experiences as her own.

Erika is constantly levelling up and role modelling the way forward for women across the globe. She shares her story and the moment she decided to make a change. ‘It’s not what happens to you, it’s what you decide to do next’ says Erika. Growing up in Boston, Erika says ‘It was a traumatic childhood’. The wake-up call came after a car accident, ‘It broke me.’ So, she moved to Australia and started on a journey of self-work and investigating why she lacked confidence. ‘I am the common denominator of my hot mess of a life, but I am also the solution.’

‘People don’t move until they are squeezed and pushed to the edge’ says Erika, ‘please don’t wait till you are at the edge before you make changes.’ The number one need in humans is connection and, over the past 2 years this has been taken away. ‘We have to remember that we have all been traumatised’ says Erika. ‘We should become the cause of our life rather than the effect.’ It’s about taking responsibility and building resilience.

Confidence needs to be practiced. ‘No one is born confident. It is a practice that needs to be worked on every day.’ One of the biggest fears in dealing with hardship is having to deal with the shit, ‘We get scared that we won’t be able to cope but, you have already done it. You’ve already gone through it.’ It’s ok to cry – sometimes it’s the only way to get rid of the heavy density. ‘It’s about not shaming yourself’ says Erika.

Erika shares with us how ‘The Sisterhood’, a coaching program for women, is different from other programs. ‘I thought – when do we, as women, sit down and share our shit? There was no safe space to do that so I wanted to create a sisterhood where this was encouraged. It’s a safe space for you to be a hot mess and not feel alone’ says Erika. She shares her ‘Next Level November’ program and encourages us to work on ourselves – no matter who we do this with. ‘Don’t tell yourself you don’t need to work on yourself – you do. We all do.’
