The Olympics have wrapped up now for another 4 years. But there is one particular story that keeps that flame burning in my heart.

It’s that of Michelle Jenneke.

In the world of athletics, few stories are as compelling as that of Michelle Jenneke, the Australian hurdling champion known not just for her athletic prowess but for her resilience in the face of adversity.

Michelle’s journey in athletics began at a young age, and her talent quickly became apparent as she excelled in hurdles, becoming a beloved figure in the sport.

Michelle first captured the world’s attention in 2012, not just for her performance on the track but also for her unique and infectious pre-race dance routine. This lighthearted and confident display made her a viral sensation, earning her the nickname “Dancing Hurdler.”

However, beneath the surface of this joyful persona was an athlete deeply committed to her craft, constantly training, visualising success, and pushing herself to new heights.

By the 2024 Olympics, Michelle was in the best form of her life. Having honed her skills over the years, she was ready to take on the world’s best knowing she’s beaten previous personal best times.

At the starting blocks, she was confident and focused, having trained for this moment her entire life. As the starting gun fired, Michelle surged ahead, leading the pack over the first and second hurdles. However, as she approached the third hurdle, disaster struck—she fell hard, collapsing to the track as the other athletes continued to hurdle their way to the finish line.

For most, such a fall would be devastating, especially in the heat of competition. But Michelle Jenneke is not most people.

Despite the intense pain from what was later diagnosed as a completely ruptured hamstring tendon, she did something extraordinary: she got up and finished the race. It wasn’t just about crossing the finish line; it was about “giving it her all”. By doing so she embodyed the spirit of resilience and demonstrated the power of self-leadership.

When she was interviewed after the race, Michelle spoke with integrity and optimism, holding herself together even though she was clearly hurting—both physically and emotionally. It was a moment that captured the hearts of many, showing that true leadership is about how we handle adversity, not just how we perform when things are going well.

Michelle returned to the track to complete the repechage knowing it was a forgone conclusion. She would run last. I cried for her.

This is the essence of courage—getting up after a fall, continuing the race even when the odds are stacked against you, and leading yourself with dignity and strength.

Michelle Jenneke’s story is a powerful reminder that setbacks are not the end; they are opportunities to rise stronger. Her example is one of the most incredible displays of self-leadership I have ever seen, and it is truly inspiring.

If you are facing your own hurdles, whether on the track or in life, Michelle’s journey offers a lesson in resilience, courage, and the unyielding spirit of a champion.

You are an absolute legend, Michelle. Thank you for shining your light.
