There are now five generations in the workforce.
With that comes a broad set of values for leaders to navigate, and all at a time where the pace of complex change continues to increase.
So how do we most effectively grapple with the evolving dynamics of a multi-generational workforce?
I had the pleasure of discussing just this with Dr. Paige Williams, an organisational psychologist, keynote speaker and honorary fellow at the University of Melbourne. With a wealth of experience and a knack for asking the right questions, Paige is a world leader in positive psychology and author of six insightful books on leadership.
Her passion for systems and organisations, specifically in leadership, led her to become one of the small team that introduced the science of well being, positive psychology to Australia.
She now works alongside leaders and teams to help them find how to be exceptional in their work and create cultures that encourage others to do the same.
Join us as we explore the fascinating psychology behind and practical strategies for engaging, leading and empowering Millennials.
The Importance of Asking the Right Questions
Paige believes asking questions is one of the most strategically leveraged tools that we have as leaders. If we can get clear on a strategic question and ask it of ourselves and those we lead, it takes what is often scattered attention and focuses it in around finding the answer.
Being mindful of the questions we’re asking is crucial, as questions determine where data, information and action flows from.
Observing Generational Differences
Paige explains that different generation’s formative years shape their values and worldviews. Millennials, for instance, grew up in a period of social, political, and economic stability, making them appear more hopeful but sometimes naive to older generations. She explains how their unique positioning allows Millennials to bridge the gap between older generations who may find technology daunting and younger ones for whom it’s second nature.
Strategies for Leading and Engaging Millennials
Once we have a better understanding about the needs and perspectives of Millennials, how do we best support them as we not only lead, but watch them shift into leadership roles?
- Seek to Understand
It’s crucial to understand Millennials’ unique perspectives and biases. Every generation carries biases shaped by their formative experiences, and recognising these can help leaders better connect with their Millennial team members. - Shift from Command to Partnering
Traditional command-and-control leadership models are less effective with Millennials. Instead, leaders should adopt a partnering approach, working alongside their Millennial team members. This involves being clear on non-negotiable expectations but also creating space for flexibility and input from those doing the work. - Assume Positive Intent
Paige swears by the strategy of assuming positive intent. By believing that team members are doing their best with the resources available to them until proven otherwise, leaders can maintain a positive and drama-free work environment. However, she also advises addressing any discrepancies directly when they arise.
Navigating Power Dynamics
Paige explains that Millennials prefer to be empowered partners rather than subjected to top-down directives. She compared this ‘with-ing’ dynamic to an infinity sign where leaders and team members work alongside each other.
A Paradigm Shift
Adopting these strategies can feel like a paradigm shift for many leaders. However, as Paige noted, this shift can also bring a sense of relief by distributing the weight of responsibility. Clarity of purpose and expectations, along with flexibility where possible, are key.
Our conversation was incredibly fascinating and provides leaders with essential tools for effectively leading and empowering Millennials in the workforce. I hope you’re as inspired as I am to not only navigate the generational divide, but also in fostering a thriving and dynamic workplace.
