There’s something about the first week of January that feels different.
The world finally exhales.
Time stretches just enough for you to notice yourself again.
And in that rare quiet, we’re told to rush.
Plan.
Set goals.
Make the next 90 days count.
Hit the ground running.
But here’s the truth I’ve learned after years of leading myself and others:
If you rush into doing before you reconnect with being, misalignment is guaranteed.
The most powerful thing you can do in early January isn’t to plan.
It’s to pause.
It’s to ask, Who do I want to be this year?
How do I want to lead myself?
What energy do I want to carry into the decisions I make?
That’s why I have decided to so something a little different this year.
I am choosing a statement, rather than a word.
Something that anchors my behaviour long after the excitement of a new year fades.
This year, mine is simple and honest:
In 2026, I choose to lead myself first, even when it feels unfamiliar.
It’s not a goal.
It’s a guide.
It’s the lens I return to when I’m stretched, challenged or standing at the edge of growth.
You might find that a sentence resonates with you too.
Or maybe what you need is a visual anchor; a colour, a symbol, a feeling.
Each year, I imagine a canvas.
Blank. Open. Ready for who I’m becoming.
This year mine is different shades red with some strategic white areas.
Red for courage, passion and stepping out of the familiar.
White for breath, space and reflection.
Because leadership, true leadership, requires both:
the doing and the being.
And as the world accelerates with AI, shifting expectations and constant change, one thing is clearer than ever:
Self-leadership is not optional.
It’s your differentiator.
Your steadiness.
Your advantage.
So before you map your goals for 2026, give yourself permission to slow down.
Ask better questions.
Let clarity arrive instead of chasing it.
