Growing up, I was captivated by the TV show Bewitched. Samantha Stephens could twitch her nose and transform any situation in an instant. It was magical to watch her change her reality so effortlessly, and as a child, I couldn’t help but wish I had that kind of power.
Now, as an adult, I’ve realised I do have a similar power—though it doesn’t involve magic or nose-twitching. My power is simple, but transformative: I click my fingers.
That click is my signal to shift gears, to take control of my attitude and mindset, no matter what’s happening around me. It reminds me that I always have a choice.
Recently, I found myself needing that reminder. I was feeling flat, frustrated, and more than a little grumpy. It was one of those days where nothing seems to go right, and I could feel my mood affecting everything and everyone around me. But in that moment, I clicked my fingers, and it all changed. Truly!
It didn’t take hours of reflection or waiting for the day to turn itself around. What it took was a decision. That’s the beauty of mindset: you can choose to shift it in an instant.
Many people feel like the start of a new week—or a new working year—is something to endure, not embrace. That mindset can weigh you down, influencing not just your mood but your productivity and relationships.
Yet the truth is, you are never powerless. You can choose your attitude and your response to the challenges you face. This isn’t about ignoring frustration or pretending life is perfect. It’s about reclaiming control.
Studies show that cultivating a positive mindset can increase productivity by up to 12% and significantly lower stress levels. It’s not just about feeling better; it’s about creating tangible results in your life.
As author Stephen Covey wisely said, “While we cannot always choose what happens to us, we can always choose our response.”
Turning Awareness into Action
Sometimes, the source is external—a demanding workload, a challenging boss, or the endless juggle of responsibilities. Other times, it’s internal—a mindset or belief that’s holding you back.
Once you’ve identified the cause, you’ve taken the first step toward change. To be aware is to be able to change it.
For me, the shift happens the moment I click my fingers. That small action instantly connects me to who I am, what I stand for, and how I want to show up in any moment. It’s a reminder of my power to decide and an anchor that keeps me aligned with my values and purpose, no matter the challenges I’m facing.
Here’s how you can shift your mindset in the moment:
- Pause and Reflect: Take a deep breath and create space to consider what’s really going on. What are your values? What kind of person do you want to be in this moment?
- Anchor Your Mindset: Use a mantra, an inspiring quote, or a small ritual (like my finger-click!) to signal your shift in attitude.
- Do Something to Support Your Choice: This might mean taking a walk, listening to music that energises you, or reading something motivational.
- Reconnect with Your Why: Remind yourself of the bigger picture—your goals, your values, and the person you’re striving to become.
Why Mindset Matters
When you choose an empowered mindset, you don’t just change your day; you change your outcomes. A positive mindset has been linked to improved decision-making, better health, and greater resilience. According to the Mayo Clinic, optimists are not only happier but also more likely to live longer and healthier lives.
