You see it everywhere.
People walking down the street.
Along the beach.
Through some of the most beautiful parts of nature.
Heads down. Phones up.
And no – they’re not looking at maps.
They’re scrolling socials. Checking emails. Replying to messages that could absolutely wait.
We’ve normalised it.
We’ve convinced ourselves we’re just “being efficient,” “making the most of our time,” or “staying connected.”
But let’s be honest.
It’s not efficiency.
It’s disconnection.
We’re so busy documenting life, we forget to live it.
The Real Cost of Always Being ‘On’
I’m not judging (well I sort of am!). I get it – kind of!
The pressure to be constantly available, responsive, switched on, has crept into every part of life, especially for leaders and entrepreneurs.
At first, it feels like you’re getting ahead.
Then, without even noticing, you’re living every moment half-there.
The stats tell the story:
- Australians check their phones an average of 58 times a day. (Deloitte Mobile Consumer Survey)
- We spend around 3 hours and 43 minutes a day glued to our devices. (Reviews.org Australia 2023 report)
- 47% of people say they feel anxious if they don’t have their phone with them.
- Over 70% of our smartphone use is passive; mindless scrolling, not meaningful activity. (Frontiers in Psychology)
We pick up our phones every 15 minutes….not because we need to,
but because we’ve forgotten how to be still.
Busy Culture vs. Presence
Here’s the truth no one wants to say out loud:
If you can’t even walk without looking at your phone, you’re not “busy.”
You’re addicted to distraction.
And busy culture loves it.
It tells you the more you fill your time, the more successful you must be.
But being always on isn’t a badge of honour.
It’s a sign you’re out of alignment.
Because true leadership – true impact – doesn’t come from being constantly distracted.
It comes from being fully present.
“Presence is a superpower in a distracted world.”
What You’re Missing
When you’re glued to your phone, you miss so much:
- The sunrise you were meant to breathe in.
- The deep conversation you could have had.
- The creative idea that needed a moment of silence to arrive.
- The feeling of actually being alive, not just busy.
Your brain needs downtime.
Your soul needs space.
Your legacy needs you to be awake to the life you’re actually living.
Because distraction is the enemy of a life well-lived.
5 Signs You’re Addicted to ‘Busy’ Without Even Realising It:
- You can’t sit still without reaching for your phone.
- You feel guilty if you’re not “doing” something.
- You check emails in nature, on holiday, at family dinners.
- Silence and stillness feels uncomfortable – like you’re wasting time.
- You measure your day by how much you squeezed in rather than what you experienced.
If any of these hit too close to home, you’re not alone.
But it’s time to wake up.
The Leadership Challenge
Great leadership isn’t about how much you hustle.
It’s about how intentionally you live.
And that starts by being present enough to notice the life you’re leading.
Next time you go for a walk – leave the phone in your bag or pocket.
Next time you’re waiting for a coffee – just wait. Maybe smile and engage with someone.
Next time you have a moment of stillness – breathe it in, instead of filling it.
Because you don’t need to be “always on” to make an impact.
You need to be awake.
Look up.
Breathe.
Be here.
That’s where real leadership – and real legacy – begins.
