It’s time for a change! I’ve been writing a leadership blog for at least 8 years now…..that’s a long time! Whilst I’ve still got a lot to say about leadership, my ‘Quick Thoughts’ will different in that they will be quick, thought provoking and easy to digest. I hope you enjoy this first one.
I attended the funeral of a close family friend a couple of weeks ago. Funerals are never a happy occasion and this one was no different because her death was quite a shock. However, there were wonderful memories pondered and heartfelt moments shared of a lovely lady by those who attended the service.
As I listened to the service, it was clear that our friend left a very clear and lasting legacy. Many stories were shared of putting her family first and retaining life long friends. The words often spoken about her were selfless, caring, thoughtful and fun. She had clear values and contributed to her community. She loved her family dearly and it was evident that she was very present with them.
One thing I loved hearing was when one of her daughters shared that even though her Mother’s death was unexpected she had no regrets. Her mother knew how she felt and she knew that her Mum loved her. She was at peace with how things were between them. That’s special.
As I was driving home, I was reflecting on what was shared and my thoughts drifted to wondering what people would say about me at my funeral. I know what I’d like them to say but I wonder if these words would be said.
Our friend built her legacy over her entire 80 years. And that’s what legacy is, a culmination of your actions over time, a perception others get from what you do, how you do it and how you make them feel.
What would people be saying about you when your time comes? Will you be happy with it? If not, you have the power to change it.
