The Superpower of Mindset

By March 15, 2024Articles, Leadership

This week, I embarked on a new experience that pushed me beyond my comfort zones and tested my mettle in ways I hadn’t anticipated. My latest endeavour? Recording the audiobook for “You Always Have a Choice.”

This project required over 10.5 hours in the studio, along with countless hours of preparation.

This was my first foray into the world of audiobook recording. As someone who hosts a podcast, I thought I had a decent grasp on recording audio. However, I quickly learned that recording an audiobook presents a unique set of challenges.

One of the biggest hurdles I faced was the difference between reading and speaking. It’s one thing to write words on a page, but it’s another to bring them to life with your voice. I struggled with pronunciation, especially with one seemingly simple word that eluded me for two days – Pivotal. I could noy get it out! But my determination saw me through to success on the third day.

Recording this audiobook also taught me about the importance of focus and concentration. The urge to move around was strong, but succumbing to it would have extended my recording time indefinitely. I learned to channel my energy into the task at hand, which was a valuable lesson in self-discipline.

Here are my top three learnings from this experience:

  1. Preparation is key. I realised early on that being familiar with the content wasn’t enough. How you convey your message through tone, pace, and pronunciation can make a world of difference. Preparation allowed me perform at my best.
  2. Asking for help is invaluable. Listening to experts and taking their advice seriously was crucial. My director’s recommendation to rest and focus solely on practicing for the next day’s session was spot on. This helped me avoid burnout and maintain the stamina needed to complete the recording.
  3. Mindset matters. Above all, the right mindset is your most powerful tool. By cultivating a mindset focused on concentration, calm, and resilience, I was able to navigate the challenges of recording and deliver a product I am proud of. Your mindset shapes your experiences and can turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

This experience of recording an audiobook wasn’t merely a step in my professional growth; it was an exploration into the realms of personal development and resilience.

This experience illuminated a core message in my book that mindset is not just a tool; it’s a superpower.
It has the ability to transform challenges into victories, doubts into confidence, and efforts into achievements. By adopting a focused, calm, and resilient mindset, I was able to navigate through obstacles and achieve a goal that initially seemed daunting.
